The Evolution of Video Recording

Remember when you could only record your favorite television programs onto a VCR? One show, one channel, one time slot … one at a time. If you wanted to record two shows during the same time slot, you needed another VCR. And then along came the DVR that allowed you to record two shows at once with a single box. Who would ever want to go back to VCR technology? Not me!

The same evolution has occurred in the video security and surveillance market, only by tenfold. Like the VCR in your home, for many years businesses had to rely on VCR’s to record and playback security footage. Believe it or not, VCR’s are still being sold and deployed today … go figure. When DVR technology was introduced it revolutionized the security industry. It allowed you to connect and record 4, 8, 16 or even 32 cameras onto a single unit at the same time. The size of the unit’s internal hard drive determines how long the video can be stored before being overwritten. DVR technology (analog cameras onto a digital hard drive) is a very popular method being used today for security and surveillance installations. Unfortunately, it is not the most efficient, effective or economical deployment method.

Limitations of DVR Technologies

Digital Video Recorders (DVRs) have been around since the 1980's. The platform that this recording system is based on is a video capture card. Over the last 20 years, the core technology of this product line has not evolved. Minimal features have been added; however the majority of product limitations have not been able to be addressed by the major manufacturers, until IVR Controls released its dynamic solutions systems.

All DVR’s have inherent problems.

  • Expensive to install and maintain
  • Obsolescence
  • Compromised by being stolen, destroyed, turned off
  • Failure of the video capture card ( #1 problem )
  • Require software updates
  • Difficult to use
  • Challenging to locate and playback video easily and quickly
  • Impossible (or expensive) to know if:
    • The unit is working properly
    • The cameras are recording
    • The connection to the internet or LAN is communicating
